  • Commercial Accounting
    • Commercial Accounting provides accounting functions for the commercial operations that support our power generation plants and our customers (logistics, risk management, marketing and trading activities). The group manages the recording and analysis of generation and hedging revenues, derivative and mark-to-market accounting, fuel accounting and settlements.
  • Corporate Accounting
    • Corporate Accounting consists of accounting for Mirant Corporation and its holding company subsidiaries. Activities include leadership of the monthly accounting close and consolidation of financial results; accounting for the company's debt, equity, and cash flow activities; benefits accounting and intercompany billing and settlements for services and overhead allocations; and preparation of cash flow statements. This group works with Mirant's legal, tax, human resources and IT departments.
  • External Reporting & Accounting Research
    • External Reporting & Accounting Research handles Mirant's compliance with Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting requirements. Employees here are responsible for maintaining provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and frequently work with investor relations, legal and human resources personnel. The group also serves as a "help desk" to the rest of the organization on technical accounting matters, including the implementation of new accounting standards. This group interacts with all accounting groups as well as the legal, tax and business development organizations.
  • Internal Controls
    • Internal Controls is the company's technical resource for regulating the governing processes and controls regarding compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Mirant's Global Internal Controls Policy. The Internal Controls department also provides support to process and control owners in the execution of their responsibilities.
  • Policies & Projects
    • Policies & Projects is the function responsible for expanding and maintaining the framework of policies used by Mirant's accounting organization, and developing the related training and compliance programs. The function will also lead the implementation assessment of International Financial Reporting Standards for Mirant.

At Mirant, we’re not just looking for people to crunch numbers — we’re looking for professionals who can interpret information and results.

Accounting, internal controls and policymaking are integral parts of our business operations. We rely on these teams for more than reporting and compliance; they provide critical information for business decisions and strategy.

What makes Mirant an attractive workplace for accountants?

Our need to comply with rigorous processes and absolute deadlines is balanced by a flexible work environment. (We even manage to have some fun too.) Employees in the accounting department manage their own workloads in accordance with strict deadlines. In addition, we offer numerous opportunities for professional development and skills-enhancement to help employees increase their career potential. We’ll give you the time, and often the funding, to attend industry and technical programs and classes — and we also offer in-house presentations coordinated through a professional development committee of accounting managers and staff.

Employees appreciate our merit-based system, which provides opportunities to develop additional depth and breadth of skills. Efforts to stretch and grow are rewarded with the opportunity to move up the career ladder and take on more challenging assignments or development opportunities.
