Mike Abell,
Senior Plant Technician

Have you ever known someone who is extremely smart, highly responsible, always follows the rules — and yet has a fun, quirky side too? That’s Mirant.

We run our business like a tight ship — and with all the procedures and processes you’d expect in a Fortune 500 company. But we let our unique personality and creativity add flavor to the workday.

The power plant is a 24/7 environment where equipment uptime is essential. We call this “commercial availability.” Teamwork and a sound regimen help ensure that everything is in working order and that we have all the necessary resources (i.e., fuel, spare parts, etc.) to produce power efficiently and without fail. It is often necessary to work overtime. And it can’t be stated enough: safety is always top-of-mind, so we talk frequently about safety issues, alerting each other to potential hazards. In general, plant employees are a close-knit group: we rely on each other and look out for one another.

As for the workplace — it’s an industrial facility. It can be dirty and noisy, and it can be cold, hot, and/or wet.  Depending on your job, you might be lifting heavy objects and spending a majority of your work day outdoors. Many employees like this kind of work because they get to be active and not chained to a desk all day. But if you’re put off by this type of environment, a plant job might not be the right fit for you. Also note that many of our plant positions require working 12-hour shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends, although this also means you might have several days off in a row.
