During the 1950s, the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and several major highways spurred a dramatic increase in population in the lower Hudson Valley.
Between 1950 and 1990, population nearly tripled, and major industrial, commercial, and office complexes took root, turning semi-rural countryside into a bustling community in the New York City metropolitan area.
The Bowline Generating Plant was built in 1974 to support this growth. Located in West Haverstraw, New York, 35 miles from New York City, the plant uses natural gas and oil to generate a baseload of electricity — enough to power approximately 1.1 million homes.
