This Bay Area city is (almost) all business; in fact, local citizens voted in 1911 to name the city in honor of the Pennsylvania steel industry. And the focus on business development hasn't stopped.

Pittsburg has one of the largest redevelopment agencies in the state, and aggressive initiatives led to estimated job growth of over 13 percent between 2000-2007.

Mirant's Pittsburg Generating Plant, the largest in the Bay Area, is critical to the growth of this city of high aspirations.

Environmental Highlights

  • Like all of Mirant's California plants, Pittsburg is governed by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District's Rule 9-11, and consistently complies with air emission standards.
  • Implementation of Rule 9-11 has resulted in a more than 90% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx).
  • Since taking ownership of the plant in 1999, Mirant has invested over $36 million to reduce NOx emissions at the plant, which includes installation of low NOx burners, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment and separated over-fire air equipment.
  • Mirant continues to pursue technologies and operating strategies that will reduce air emissions.

Community Outreach

Gifts for Kids in Need

Employees from Mirant California helped coordinate the Holiday Helpers Warehouse community charity that provided needy children with toys, clothing and other items over the holidays. Pittsburg also set up a Salvation Army Gift Giving Tree in the plant, featuring tag "ornaments" that listed items needed for specific children. Employees bought and wrapped the items and the Salvation Army distributed them.

Support for Middle School Metal Shop

In 2006, employees from Pittsburg and nearby Contra Costa Generating Plant teamed up to donate equipment and mechanical repair services to keep metal shop classes open at Willis Jepson Middle School.

Taking Pounds Off the "Wasteline"

Last September, Pittsburg joined other Mirant California locations in the California Coastal Commission's Coastal Cleanup Day. The Mirant group covered approximately two miles of shoreline and collected over 310 pounds of garbage from the ground and water.

Child Spree

Mirant California sponsored the Child (shopping) Spree back-to-school event, helping underprivileged children start the new school year with fresh clothes and supplies. Pittsburg employees and their fellow Mirant California colleagues assisted the children in selecting clothes, shoes and school items.
