Potomac River Generating Plant is critical to meeting the high demand of electricity required in and around our nation's capital. Yet what was once an isolated facility is now juxtaposed in every direction with newer development and dense population. Balancing the various needs of the plant's constituency is a job Potomac River employees take seriously.
A major focus here is to improve air quality around the plant. Since acquiring Potomac River in 2000, Mirant has made several major improvements to minimize emissions and operate more cleanly. From 2005-2006, we:
- Reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions 64%;
- Decreased nitrous oxide (NOx) 24.7%; and
- Maintained a 5% level of opacity — far below federal requirements of 20%.
Mirant's four plants in the D.C. area, including Potomac River, comply with operating permit emission limits.

Environmental Highlights
- Use dust-suppression systems
- Installed a waste water neutralization system
- Collect and treat all run-off water from coal piles
- Monitor all plant discharge points for contaminants
- Implemented a storm water pollution prevention plan
- Installed a venturi on each stack to imitate a taller stack due to limits of original equipment (in flight path of Reagan National airport)
- Installed low NOx burners on all units
- Use SOFA (Separated Over-Fire Air) on Units 3-5 (2005)
- Use devices capable of removing more than 99.7% of flyash (small solid particles of ash and soot emitted from burning coal)
- Implemented a Continuous Emissions Monitoring System on all stacks to check opacity (smoke), SO2 and NOx
- Use low sulfur coal to reduce SO2 emissions
Community Outreach
Potomac River Clean Up
In partnership with the National Park Service and local community groups, the station hosts clean up events twice a year along the Potomac River. Each year our employees have hauled away several hundred pounds of debris from the river and shoreline. In March 2007, our employees participated in the Annual Potomac River Watershed Clean-up, cleaning the river of over 66 bags of trash, four tires, and other items.
Holiday Giving
The plant "adopted" a family of six children for a holiday program coordinated by the Alexandria Human Services Department. Employees provided all the gifts on the kids' wish lists, as well as groceries and a retail gift certificate for Mom.
